Sailing in Portugal, July 2010

Wednesday 14th July. We got a good send off at Governor's Harbour airport.

Moday 18th July and our first day at the Cascais Sailing club. We wanted to sail lasers, but the club did not have any available, so they gave us a 420, a very fast 2 man dinghy that none of us had sailed before. The wind was gusting to 30kn, and Kenneth looked very apprehensive, so I took the tiller with Justin as crew. Kenneth watched from the coach boat.

By Wednesday, the wind had dropped to below 20kn, and Kenneth felt more confident about having a go. Here they get the boat ready on the slipway.

In a 2 man boat, helm and crew have to work together.

Justin has a trapeze wire clipped on to his waist harness, so that he can stand on the side of the boat, using all his weight to balance it.

Watched by instructor Gonzalo.

Sailing down wind, one on each side of the boat.

Upwind again, and the spray starts to fly!

That's the coast of Portugal in the background. This is the Atlantic Ocean.

"That was fun"

On the weekend, the four of us hit many buckets of balls at a driving range, and Mark perfects his putting skills.

Kenneth tries his best to learn his swing.
